Structure Fire at an Apartment Complex with Rescues

Turlock Fire Department responded to the report of a working structure fire on the 300 block of East Monte Vista Avenue at approximately 8:40 a.m. on Thursday, April 30, 2020.

Crews arrived to find smoke and flames issuing from first and second story windows of the multi-resident apartment complex. Efforts were immediately focused on two residents trapped on the second story of the building, prompting the initiation of imminent rescue operations. Simultaneously, crews began interior fire attack using multiple attack lines. Truck 31 was assigned search and rescue to all adjoining units which were cleared within a matter of minutes.

A total of four residents were treated by AMR staff however, none were transported for additional medical care. Several of the residents’ pets were also safely removed during the rescue operations. No pets were harmed throughout the event.

Interim Fire Chief Gary Carlson stated, “Having a fire station with a staffed engine located one block away absolutely led to the best possible outcome in this situation. The crew’s ability to respond and take immediate action in this instance prevented major injuries and saved lives.”

The occupants of the four residences were displaced due to extensive property loss and damage. The American Red Cross will be assisting them with needs resulting from the fire.

Turlock Fire Department responded with Engine 31, Engine 33, Engine 34, Truck 31, one battalion chief, and two division chiefs. In accordance with the mutual aid agreement, Modesto Fire Chief 2 provided additional assistance as well as Ceres Fire who responded with Engine 13, Engine 15, and one battalion chief. The Turlock Police Department provided crowd and traffic control while AMR provided patient care. TID and PG&E were also on-scene and secured utilities.
