Maintenance Worker, Senior


    DEFINITION

    This is the advanced journey level classification in the Maintenance Worker series. The incumbent performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in construction, operation, maintenance and repairs of public works and related facilities; including street maintenance, park maintenance and building and grounds maintenance and custodial duties; sign and sign painting, landscaping and streetscaping, street and storm water facilities, sidewalks, athletic facilities, swimming facilities and perform other necessary work as required to meet City needs. Incumbent also coordinates and oversees work performed by less experienced personnel as assigned.

    This classification is assigned to the Miscellaneous bargaining unit for labor relations purposes and is subject to overtime, call-back and standby assignments.

    DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

    The Senior Maintenance Worker is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker I/II in that the Senior performs more difficult and technical assignments requiring specialized skill on an independent basis as well as the operation of field maintenance equipment and lead worker assignments as required. Positions assigned to this class are filled by advancement from the Maintenance Worker I/II class.

    SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

    General supervision is provided by the Parks, Recreation and Public Facilities Manager, Superintendent or the Maintenance Supervisor. Technical or functional supervision may provided by the Maintenance Supervisor or Assistant Supervisors.

    Responsibilities may include indirect supervision of lower level maintenance personnel on a project basis.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Duties may include all the functions of a Maintenance Worker II in addition to, but not limited to the following:

    • Water, mow, edge, weed, trim, renovate and fertilize lawns, shrubs, trees and flowerbeds using established landscaping techniques.
    • Identify pest and disease problems, calibrate and apply pesticides and herbicides while adhering to proper safety and application guidelines.
    • Participate in paving, patching, grading and repair of pot holes.
    • Maintain and repair traffic signs; inspect and evaluate sign and road paint conditions; mix and apply paints.
    • Design, install, maintain and repair irrigation systems.
    • Operate and oversee operation of a wide variety of construction and maintenance equipment such as backhoes, loaders, graders, tractors, air compressors, dump trucks, packers, chippers, paving machines, vibratory rollers, trenchers, gang mowers, paint spray truck, traffic striper, etc.
    • Set up and oversee activities at a jobsite ensuring use of proper safety techniques and use of correct working standards.
    • Maintain records of activities and supplies used.
    • Respond to public inquiries and complaints using established customer service techniques.
    • Clean and maintain park facilities and restrooms to include electrical, plumbing and cement work.
    • Requisition and purchase supplies and materials to complete projects; maintain records and inventory of activities and supplies used.
    • Perform more complex and difficult work requiring independent judgement and action.
    • Assist and train less experienced personnel.
    • Clean and maintain buildings and grounds using safe work techniques and established work practices.
    • Troubleshoot, diagnose and repair machines and equipment such as air conditioners, heaters, dishwashers, water pipes, lights, toilets, etc.
    • Maintain facilities such as swimming pools, tennis courts and other athletic facilities.
    • Inspect buildings and park facilities for vandalism and perform necessary maintenance; inspect buildings to ensure they are ready for rental use.
    • Perform related duties as assigned.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Knowledge of:

    • Materials, methods, practices and equipment used in parks and street maintenance and construction activities, traffic sign repair, road striping and building and grounds maintenance and repair.
    • OSHA regulations pertaining to work place safety, occupational hazards, standard safety procedures and safety equipment including personal protective equipment.
    • Technical tree trimming methods, techniques, equipment and procedures.
    • Operation of heavy and light maintenance and construction equipment.
    • Procedures for requisitioning and purchasing necessary materials and supplies.
    • Preventative maintenance of mechanical equipment.
    • Plant pests and diseases and methods of control and eradication.
    • Plumbing, electrical, cement and carpentry work related to parks facilities, buildings and grounds facilities.
    • Principles and practices of supervision and training.

    Ability to:

    • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
    • Understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
    • Provide training and perform lead work assignments as directed.
    • Perform skilled park and street and building and grounds maintenance work.
    • Estimate costs for jobs.
    • Read and interpret construction plans and specifications.
    • Learn and apply City standards and specifications related to Parks and Trees Ordinances, Sign Ordinances and paving and striping projects.
    • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
    • Operate a variety of light and heavy equipment.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during the course of work.
    • Prepare reports and maintain records.
    • Perform heavy manual labor.
    • Perform the more difficult maintenance tasks requiring special skills in; carpentry, plumbing and electrical work.
    • Operate computers and access files.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    Education:

    High School diploma or GED certificate. Six college units or CEU’s in a related field or scholastic general education (i.e. Speech, Math, English, Science, Foreign Language etc.) and three college units or CEU’s in Supervision or Management for a total of nine college units or CEU’s.

    Experience:

    Three years of experience as a Maintenance Worker in a position comparable to a Maintenance Worker II with the City of Turlock.

    LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATE

    License:

    Possession of an appropriate, valid California Class B Drivers License and proof of automobile liability insurance at the time of appointment, to be maintained as a condition of continued employment.

    Certificates:

    • Possession of Signs and Markings I Certification.
    • Possession of a Hazardous Materials First Responder, Awareness Level, (FRA) Certification.
    • Possession of one of the following certifications from the list below at time of appointment:

    1. Pesticide Applicator’s Certificate

    2. Certified Pool Operator Certification

    3. Playground Safety Certification

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    Maintain the following physical abilities: see well enough to read and write, view computer screens, make observations. Use of hands and fingers for use of computer keyboard, copy machine, filing, writing, answering telephones, operating hand and power tools, driving vehicles and heavy equipment; hear well enough to converse on the radio, telephone and in person assisting customers; bodily mobility to walk, bend, stand, crouch or climb for extended periods of time and to operate assigned equipment and vehicles and perform heavy, manual labor for extended periods, able to work at elevated heights for extended periods, able to tolerate extreme fluctuations in temperature while performing essential functions and be able to lift equipment as necessary.
