Parks, Recreation and Community Commission

The Parks, Recreation and Community Commission is comprised of seven (7) members, appointed by the Mayor with approval from the City Council.

The Parks, Recreation and Community Commission shall encourage, stimulate, promote and foster programs for the enrichment of the City and hereby contribute to the quality of life in Turlock and develop an awareness in the business community, in local government and in the general public of the value and benefits of the constructive use of leisure time in Turlock.

The Parks, Recreation and Community Commission shall initiate, sponsor or conduct, alone or in cooperation with other public or private agencies and/or individuals, programs to further the development and public awareness of, and interest in, recreation, neighborhods, community policing, youth master planning and senior master planning.

Applications for Commission positions may be requested from the City of Turlock Administrative Offices.

2011 Goals

  • Review all current recreation programs and provide feedback to staff.
  • Establish commissioner sponsorship program for various facilities and programs.
  • Promote parks and programs to the citizens of Turlock and surrounding communities.
  • Actively participate in the Recreation fundraising events.
  • Proactively search out funding opportunities to support our mission.
Current Commissioners:

Michael Dowd
Mr. Dowd has lived in California for almost 40 years and moved to Turlock in 2003. He has a Bachelor’s Degree from California State University, Sacramento, is a PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association of America) Class A Member, and has been the Head PGA Golf Professional at Oakdale Golf & Country Club since 2001. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Northern California Section of the PGA, and chairs the Public Relations/Communications/Political Action Committee. He and his wife, Julieanne, have two young daughters.

Steven Nacimento
Mr. Nascimento understands the important role recreational opportunities play in creating a vibrant and healthy community, which is why he proudly serves on the Turlock Parks, Recreation and Community Commission. Nascimento attended California State University, Stanislaus, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science. He has spent his career working with Central Valley communities and continues to do so as a field representative for California’s 18th Congressional District. With his prior experience as a planning technician for the City of Modesto, he plans to use his knowledge and skill-set to help plan future recreation spaces and opportunities for Turlock. Nascimento is a lifelong resident of Turlock, where he lives with his wife, Alexis, and their two dogs.

Barney Gordon
Mr. Gordon is a native Californian and moved to Turlock in 2002 after spending 10 ? years in the U. S. Navy. He has a Master's degree in Business Administration and, as a life-long learner, is currently continuing his education in Public Administration at CSU Stanislaus. He is very involved in the community and currently serves on many community boards and committees; believing that engaged citizens are the backbone to a successful community. Barney, his wife, and two daughters are proud to call Turlock home.
