Go Green Week
As part of our efforts to encourage environmental stewardship, the City of Turlock offers various activities and programs to students to teach earth-friendly behaviors. The cornerstone of our school-age public education campaign is the City of Turlock’s “Go Green Week” program.
Through a partnership involving City staff, teachers, administrators, community organizations, volunteers and parents, students learn about conservation and pollution prevention strategies such as recycling, composting, water conservation and waste reduction activities. The week includes a variety of activities such as; school site visits by local business representatives, recycling contests, and a “Wear Green Day”. Green awareness bracelets are distributed to every student to wear throughout the entire week. The presentation topics are selected by the teachers to reinforce learning that is already taking place in the classroom.
Go Green week helps to engage youth citizens of Turlock in individual and collective activities to improve their health, to improve their schools and to inspire participation in building solutions for a sustainable future. By recognizing that our future success is tied to their understanding and acceptance of socially just endeavors, Go Green Week aims to educate the children of today’s society in order to instill a sense of responsibility for the quality of living in Turlock in the future.
Go Green Week Testimonials
As “Go Green” week comes to a close, I need to thank the City of Turlock, and especially Toni Cordell, for making our 1st experience a memorable one. Tomorrow, 5th grade has a water conservation presentation at 1:00 PM, along with a visit from…RECYCLEMAN during your lunch recess. I hope your students have learned a few things about our environment, how to care for it, and the impact humans have, either positive or negative, on our ever changing world. In essence, “Go Green” needs to be every week to truly make a difference. Thanks again for your participation this year as we ready ourselves for the 09-10 school year.
Speaking of 09-10, Yolanda Rivera and Marianne Bunce have graciously volunteered their support to be the contact person(s) for next year’s campaign. If you have any ideas or concepts we can incorporate as future activities, please don’t hesitate to visit with them as they begin the planning process for the new year.

Thank you so much for all your organization and preparations to make Go Green a success not only at Walnut, but for our entire district. You are to be commended for creating a wonderfully important opportunity for children. We at Walnut are so fortunate to have you in our community. I appreciate your taking on such an enormous task, and for making it all go so smoothly. Our children are now more than ever aware of the importance of caring not only for our resources in Turlock, but also as citizens of our planet Earth.
Great job and let’s Go Green in ’10!

You may feel free to quote me about how fitting the field trips were to water and recycle. Mrs. Wheeler said the kids really got talking after both. They had never wondered where things went when the toilet got flushed! The students are into the “conservation mode” now. They are learning how important every drop of water is and how recycling saves energy and materials.

Arbor Day Tree Planting
Every year the City holds an Arbor Day tree-planting event that combines City crews and City school children in a day of planting trees. Not only do the children learn hands-on of the important roles trees play in our community, but also new trees help anchor soil thus minimizing soil erosion.
