Public Art
Art has outlined the progress, vision and values of cultures and communities through time. It is a tangible record of people’s interaction with their surroundings. Historically, Public Art gives identity and dimension, revitalizes communities both psychologically and economically, and makes cities more human. Providing for art in public places assures that the City recognizes its commitment to the physical image of the community and the quality of life of our residents.
The City of Turlock establishes policies ensuring the provision for and incorporation of art in all public building plans. These programs, administered by the TCAC, are intended to enhance the environment, provide aesthetic and creative solutions to spaces accessible to the public, and enrich the lives of Turlock citizens through the stimulating ideas of contemporary artists. The realm of Public Art is broad and can include objects such as sculptures, paintings and murals, exterior treatments of walls, or amendments to landscape design such as benches, fountains, or lights.
When the potential for a Public Art project is identified within the City, the TCAC, through its sub-committee on Public Art,
- Meets with City engineers, property owners, and other stakeholders to establish design criteria,
- Initiates the call for proposals from qualified artists,
- Coordinates the selection panel,
- Conducts the proposal review, and
- Recommends design proposals to the City Council for approval.
