Fire Prevention Tips
The cold weather is definitely here, with that in mind, some homeowners will use fireplaces and space heaters to keep warm. But creosote and smoke from your fireplace coat the inside of your chimney creating fuel for fires. The Fire Department recommends the following: Fireplaces: • Have a professional chimney sweeper clean your chimney every year because creosote and smoke from your fireplace coat the inside of your chimney creating fuel for fires. • Remember to open your flue for the first fire of the season. • Install a spark arrester—a mesh screen—on the top of your chimney to keep sparks from igniting your roof or debris outside your house.
Fire Prevention Tips
Space Heaters: • Select a space heater with a guard around the flame area or the heating element. This will help keep children, pets and clothing away from the heat source. • Never leave a space heater unattended or on when you go to sleep. • Place heaters at least three feet away from objects such as bedding, furniture and drapes. Never use heaters to dry clothes or shoes. Do not place heaters where towels or other objects could fall on the heater and start a fire. Fire Explorer Program
This program is designed as an awareness tool for young adults who are interested in a career within the Fire Service. The Explorer program functions as an entiity of the Boy Scouts of America® but is under the direction of Turlock City Fire. Explorers will cover numerous topics as it relates to Fire Service such as: Fire Behavior, CPR/First Aid, Ropes/Knots, Hose Drills, etc. For more information or an application, please contact Turlock City Fire and Emergency Services at 209-668-5580
